In
1947, Jack Zarowny took over the
Ford-Mercury and Case dealership
in Elk Point, Alberta, from C. A. Markstad, who had operated the
dealership since 1917. Jack and his brother Tony, in partnership,
provided a much-appreciated service to the town of Elk Point and
district and their business thrived for many years.
Jack
brought to Elk Point more than
stamina and a congenial personality. His wife, Pearl, charmed
everyone with her serene
manner in raising identical twin sons, David and Daniel.
The
young boys were soon most visible on the streets and school yards of
Elk Point. They excelled at all sports and cut a dashing figure
as they drove Jack's Edsel around the town. Dave and Dan left Elk
Point for
university and hockey but the lure
of the garage remained strong.
In
1964, Jack and Tony established a
second Zarowny Motors location in the nearby town of St. Paul.
The St. Paul and
Elk Point locations provided just about everything a
customer could expect from a dealership—fine Ford products, Case
tractors and Farmhand equipment, plus a full range of automotive and
autobody repair services.
Owners Jack and Tony were proud of
their facilities and team of technicians who were well known for their
expertise. So well known, in fact, that people travelled from as
far north as Cold Lake and as far east as the Saskatchewan
border.
These were great
distances in those days, considering the
rough gravel roads, but customers considered it well worth the trip to
deal with the brothers at their modern facilities.
In 1970, Dave and Dan took over the management of the St. Paul location and effectively transferred the headquarters of the dealership from Elk Point to St. Paul. The Elk Point location was sold in 1975.
